Today we went to the Macron to play Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup. The ground is right next to the motorway and you can see it as you come off the junction.
It’s a nice bowl shaped design and it’s one non of the Mini Mariners have been to before. When we got there we were greeted by some police horses.
The away end filled up nicely with what was over 1900 mariners but the home end didn’t look too full and wasn’t very noisy. The announcer made up for them and we could spot him from where we were sat.
When the game kicked off we looked quite defensive with Omar more out wide and Vernon up front on his own. This was ok when we didn’t have the ball but we struggled to move up the pitch when we did. Bolton had really good movement which you should expect having won so many games in a row, only conceding 1 goal and hot on the heels of our neighbours up the 180. Chances were coming but they couldn’t get them on target.
Liam Trotter got the only goal of the game in the 20th minute from a corner where he was unmarked, that was frustrating!
In the 2nd half the tables turned Grimsby Town looked like the team a division higher! We were attacking well, keeping the ball but like Bolton couldn’t hit the target. Super physio/Caretaker Manager Dave Moore brought 2 wingers on which is what the game was crying out for and we got more and more joy but it wasn’t to be. The keeper couldn’t be beaten as much as we tried!
The army were loud and proud as always which Bolton fans and the players appreciated.
It wasn’t a win but we played well in defeat and when we start scoring goals we will fly!
